Social Studies: 

Democracy: 

Society: People in a society share the same government and the same rules and laws. A society may also be a group of people who have the same interests or culture. 
Constitution: The basic rules in Canada are in our Constitution. The Constitution is the most important law of the land. It outlines the structure of the government and the rights of the people.
Citizen: The people who make up a community. Everyone who was born in Canada is a Canadian Citizen. People who move to Canada must apply to become a Canadian citizen.
Government: The purpose of government is to make sure that the people in a society have safe, comfortable lives. Here are some things our government does: 
  • Government provides services.
  • Government protects rights and freedoms.
  • Government provides leadership.
Individual rights: rights that you are entitled to as a person. One of the jobs of government is to identify and protect people’s individual rights.
Collective rights: protect a group. Individuals who are part of a group that has collective rights are entitled to these rights.
Responsibility: People have a responsibility to inform the government of what they want and need. They have a responsibility to make their point of view known and to listen and try to understand the points of view of others.

Local Government:

Mayor: the leader of the local government council.
Councillor: a person elected to local government.
Council: a group of elected representatives who make a decision for a local area.
Bylaws: laws that are passed by a local government.
Motion: an idea or proposal discussed and voted on in a meeting.
Municipal Area: a region that has its own local government.
Ballot: a piece of paper used for voting in elections.
Nominate: to identify a person as a possible candidate for an elected position.
Petition: a written request that contains the signatures of people who support its content.

Provincial Government:

Referendum: allows eligible voters to vote on an issue or law proposed by the government.
Subsidies: are funds provided by the government for those who need help to participate in a program.
Premier: the leader of the provincial government.
Lieutenant Governor: the Queen's representative.
Member of the Legislative Assembly: also referred to as an MLA.
Cabinet Minister: a member of the Cabinet.
Bill: a proposed or suggested law.
Act: a bill that has been passed by the Legislative Assembly and signed by the Lieutenant Governor. An act is also known as a law.
Political Party: an organization made up of people who share similar ideas about how to govern.
Constituency: a voting district.
